The St. Michael’s admissions process includes the following key dates and reminders.

Admissions Timeline

Kindergarten Open House (for parents): Wednesday, October 23, 2024, 9:30-11:30 a.m. – AT CAPACITY/COMPLETED

Applications must be submitted by DECEMBER 1 in order to be considered in our first round of admission decisions. Applications will continue to be accepted through the spring and summer with decisions continuing on a rolling basis as space permits.

WPPSI-IV Cognitive Abilities Testing is administered beginning in October 2024

Kindergarten Readiness testing for children whose applications are on file
January 2025

Kindergarten electronic notification
Friday, February 21 at 4 p.m.
(Admissions decisions will continue on a rolling basis after this date as space permits.)

Contracts are due:
Thursday, March 6 at Noon

NOTE: St. Michael’s Episcopal School requires that all enrolled students be currently vaccinated as prescribed by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Grades 1 – 5

WPPSI-IV Cognitive Abilities Testing is administered beginning in January 2025

Assessment Visits for prospective students begin January 2025

Initial admissions decisions for Lower School applicants (grades 1-5) are made after February 14 (space permitting) and continue on a rolling basis after this date as space permits.

Assessment Visits for prospective students begin January 2025

Initial admissions decisions for Middle School applicants are made in March 2025 and will continue on a rolling basis after this date as space permits.

  • Availability of space
  • Admissions testing
  • Student assessment
  • Previous school records including updated immunization form
  • Teacher recommendation
  • Evidence that the applicant will benefit from and contribute to the School’s complete program

Step 2: WPPSI-IV Testing

The WPPSI-IV (Wechsler Preschool & Primary Scale of Intelligence, Fourth Edition) is an individual assessment, administered by a trained and licensed psychologist, that measures the cognitive abilities of young children. Testing may be scheduled through St. Michael’s beginning in October, for a fee of $150*, at another participating independent school, or privately through a practitioner of your choosing (list below). Please complete the required Testing Preference Form to the right, indicating where you wish to have your child tested.

*Note: WPPSI testing administered at St. Michael’s, includes the testing and a review of the results with Admissions staff. A written report will not be provided. Testing administered privately includes the testing, a consultation with the psychologist, and a copy of the full written report.

Testing Preference Form

Step 3: Release Form & Common School Report

The Common School Report is required as part of the Kindergarten admission process. The form will be available for you to print and give to your child’s teacher on December 6. In the meantime, please complete and sign the Release Form to the right.

The Common School Report is a shared form used by a consortium consisting of the following schools: Collegiate School, Good Shepherd Episcopal School, Richmond Montessori School, St. Catherine’s School, St. Christopher’s School, St. Michael’s Episcopal School, and The Steward School.

Step 4: Readiness Testing

Readiness testing is done at St. Michael’s in January. This assessment allows your child to meet individually with one of our kindergarten teachers and demonstrate his or her Pre-K skills. Registration Information TBA

Step 3: Student Visit Day and Academic Assessment

Our team will work with your family to schedule a visit for your child. These visits typically start at the beginning of January. During this all-day visit, your child will be matched with a student host and have the opportunity to experience a day in the life of a St. Michael’s student, and learn more about the School. Your child will also complete a grade-level academic assessment as part of the visit.

Step 4: Transcripts and Teacher Recommendation

Report cards, standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, and an immunization form are required as part of the application. St. Michael’s will contact your child’s current school in December to obtain these documents. Please complete and sign the required Transcript Release Form to the right.
