For St. Michael’s Middle School Open House on January 9, I was asked to prepare a few reasons why prospective families should consider our program for the middle school years. Upon completion of the task, I found my reasons to be so compelling that I have included them in this newsletter in the hope that they may be shared with friends and neighbors.
For St. Michael’s Middle School Open House on January 9, I was asked to prepare a few reasons why prospective families should consider our program for the middle school years. Upon completion of the task, I found my reasons to be so compelling that I have included them in this newsletter in the hope that they may be shared with friends and neighbors.
First – St. Michael’s has a strong academic program. Every member of the Class of 2010 who applied to an independent school was accepted by that school. Eight members of this class were offered placement in the highly competitive Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School.
Second – St. Michael’s Middle School is an accredited IB Middle Years Program. The strength of an IB education is acknowledged throughout the world. It needs to be noted that IB education does not prescribe a specific curriculum. However, it does emphasize commitment to holistic learning, international perspectives, development of communication skills, stewardship of the environment and community service.
It requires continued learning, planning and assessment by faculty. We think it makes St. Michael’s even stronger.
Third – A wide range of clubs, sports and activities are available to our students. From
participating on LEGO and lacrosse teams, to drama and band, to socials and to service learning opportunities, St. Michael’s provides Middle School students ways to discover new interests and to develop new skills. We offer the advantage of many offerings usually associated with larger schools.
Fourth – Few schools can match this setting or have nicer facilities. In spite of rising costs St. Michael’s has remained a value in the Richmond area. This is due to an enrollment that annually approaches capacity as well as the generosity and support of our friends and parents.
Fifth – For over fifty years St. Michael’s has been an Episcopal School. Although we are proud of our heritage that acknowledges and practices Christian values, we are grateful that children of different races, religions and socio-economic backgrounds are happy here.
In conclusion – Still not convinced? Talk to parents and students who have been in our program. You might mention our name to area independent schools’ admissions directors or public school guidance counselors. Many of them can tell our story better than I.
